They bloom only a few days in early summer, but that is
long enough for these rambling roses to brighten the rough hewn walls of this
old Southeastern smokehouse. Hardy flowers with a delicate beauty, these
roses, planted by families now long gone, have continued to thrive and spread.
Feeling the security of the abandoned smokehouse are a dozen black crested
chickadees who search for food among the leaves and branches.
