The 9th century Castle of Chillon in Geneva, Switzerland, is a massive stone vessel moored fast to the shore.  Now a museum, Chillon was first a fortress and later the "Favorite Place of Abode" of dukes and duchesses.  Francis Bonivard's imprisonment in the castle inspired Lord Byron's poem "Prisoner of Chillon."
