The Good Earth is a composite of sights familiar to Ben Hampton.  One can almost feel the weariness of the old farmer as he prepares his ground for spring planting.  The farmers in the Appalachian hills and mountains felt a special pride in their homesteads as is evidenced by the well-kept farmhouse, surrounding buildings and split rail fence in this painting.
