The morning fog is clearing to reveal the last traces of summer around the
Vann Tavern and the uniquely formed old cedar tree. With the early light
flickering in the window, one can imagine the rich historic past of this
original Cherokee structure, dating back to the 1800's. Originally located
in Gainesville, Georgia, the old tavern of hand-hewn logs and wood shingles
would have been covered by Lake Lanier if it had not been moved to New Echota in
the early 1950's. The downstairs area was the restaurant and kitchen while
the back steps led to the guest quarters.
"Daybreak at Chota" is the final chapter to a remarkable and wonderful
career. So appropriately, Ben ended his creating, including all the
elements he held in reverence and cared so deeply about in this, his last
painting.
